Bulk Crystal Growth Development of “New” Materials

Abstract

The development of new crystal products is a continuing effort at SYNOPTICS. Commercially successful products require harnessing our capabilities in high-temperature bulk crystal growth and understanding of structure-property relationships including crystallographic, optical, thermal, magnetic, mechanical, and thermodynamic properties of materials to provide viable products for our customers. This talk will review our most recent development work in bulk single crystal growth for several different applications. First, our capability of producing high-purity raw material fluorides will be reviewed. Next, various RE-doped YLF crystals with large form factors have been demonstrated. Additionally, new fluoride laser crystal products to be discussed are Ho- and Nd-doped LuLiF4 and Pr-doped BaY2F8. Finally, the growth development of materials for use in adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators (ADRs) will be discussed, including Yb3Ga5O12 (YbGG) and GdLiF4 (GLF).

Biography

Dr. Kelvin Chang received his B.S. in chemistry at Haverford College and pursued his Ph.D. in chemistry at Northwestern University under the guidance of Prof. Kenneth Poeppelmeier. After graduating from Northwestern, he worked at Northrop Grumman SYNOPTICS, where he joined the R&D department to develop crystal growth of new products.
